Around half a bag taken out of Beltzville State Park today. Penny and I were back on the Sawmill Trail and the goal was to stay somewhat clean for her vet visit later in the day. The problem was you can't stay clean while picking up trash in the rain. So, at the end of our hike, we were soaking wet, muddy and had to run home before her appointment.
One nice thing about this hike was that the areas of this trail that I have cleaned up prior have stayed clean. Most of the items today were ones I couldn't have seen when there was leaf cover or were older items found on the stream bank and not right off the trail.
From the trail I could only see one of these. I pick one up, see another, pick that one up, see another and so on. This happens very often.
View on the backside of an old dam. It has filled in with sediment over time. I wonder how deep it was when the dam was first built and how long it took to fill in.
More trash with other washed up debris.
Just a view of the stream.
Old quarry. I am glad not too many people throw trash into this. There is no safe way of getting it out if they did.
The trail being moved was new. The portion of the trail here that used to follow the stream was really hard to navigate in the winter and it looked from above like it may have had a washout. I do have a problem with the cut trees. Our Hemlocks have enough problems with the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, they don't need someone doing trail maintenance cutting them down. I don't understand why they were cut either. The root systems would keep the trail in place and prevent future washout.
The second old dam on the Sawmill trail from up above on the new section of trail. I have other photos from the other side of this dam in previous posts.
You too can help with taking out the trash! If you get out hiking take a grocery bag with you, give it a second use and fill it with trash while you are out! Every bit helps. You can also help contributing to this project at: gofundme.com/takingoutthetrash
