Just Some Cans and a Pantherophis alleghaniensis (9-May-2014)
I took Penny to a location other than the Knob yesterday to hike and collect some cans. I only picked up around 20 cans and a couple bottles, but we did come across this Eastern Rat Snake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis). This particular species is the largest in PA and is non-venomous. If you ever come across a snake on a trail, venomous or not, just give it some distance and go on your way. They are all harmless if you give them the respect that they deserve. I love it when I come across wildlife while out hiking and I will try to add photos when I do.
